Weight Training Articles

Weight training is an incredibly important part of an effective muscle building program, as it is the very stimulus that is responsible for producing muscle growth.

Forget about all of the fancy workout machines and exercise gizmos you see plastered in the commercials and magazines; a basic weight training program using freeweights cannot be matched in effectiveness.

Here are 5 simple, practical weight training tips that you can start implementing right away to build muscle and gain strength fast...

Weight Training Tip #1: Train Hard

If you aren't willing to push yourself intensely during your weight lifting workout, don't expect to see any real results. Muscles grow as they adapt to stress, and the last 1-2 reps of every weighttraining set should always be very challenging.

Weight Training Tip #2: Progression

If you want to see continual gains in muscle size and muscle growth, then you need to focus on progression throughout your weight training program. Every time you perform a weightlifting workout you should aim to improve on your previous week's performance by lifting more weight or performing more reps.

Weight Training Tip #3: Keep Workouts Short

Try to keep every weight training workout under 60 minutes in length. When you train for longer than this your body secretes a powerful muscle wasting hormone called "cortisol". Long workouts also increase your chances of injury and overtraining.

Weight Training Tip #4: Keep Workouts Infrequent

Remember, your muscles don't grow during your weight training workouts, but rather while you're at rest. Because of this it's critical that you give them proper recovery time in between weight training workouts. 3-4 weight training routines per week is all you'll need in order to grow muscle.

Weight Training Tip #5: Use Low To Moderate Reps

Low to moderate reps are the best way to build muscle through weight training. For the majority of your sets, pick a weight that allows you to perform at least 5 reps in proper form but that is heavy enough that you cannot complete more than 7.
