Muscle building is no different. The process of muscle growth is scientifically termed "hypertrophy".

As you exercise, you stress your muscles with the act of weightlifting. You approach muscular failure, the point where your muscles "give out" and you can't go any further no matter how you struggle, with each subsequent repetition. As you approach failure, you cause greater and greater damage to your muscle fibers, which produces what are termed micro-tears.

In other words, you are degrading your muscle fibers as a result of the damage incurred. When the body recognizes its muscles are breaking down, it first acts to repair the damage.

The repair process starts the moment your workout ends. Since the goal is to maintain health and life, the body will increase the size and strength of the muscles as a safeguard against future damage.

Micro-tears produced from weight training force the body to repair damaged tissue, which results in enhanced size and strength as an evolutionary adaptation. While this is a simple point, it is crucial to know what it means for muscle building success.

The muscle building process is akin to the processes by which calluses form on the skin as a result of overuse. Muscle tissue is basically the body's internal calluses, continually growing with repeated use.

We return to the question of how do muscles grow. You will only get muscle growth if you convince your body there is a threat to its well-being. This will cause the body to activate is adaptation responses devised to handle such stresses.

I repeat: your body must view your workout as a threat to its well-being and capacity for survival. This is the exact reason why an unmotivated attitude in the gym will not produce muscle gains.
