There is a great deal of contention concerning the value of glutamine as a good supplement for bodybuilding with the ability to assist people in gaining weight. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body, comprising about 65 percent of the total amino acid pool. The body can naturally produce it when necessary, which makes it a nonessential amino acid. When the body is stressed, the pool of amino acids is depleted, which hinders muscle growth. Therefore, for some lifters felt it was logical to include glutamine as a supplement for bodybuilding.
Other people maintain that glutamine accentuates the body's ability to both repair damage muscles and limit soreness after workouts. Others suggest that it enhances the immune system, so taking it before a weight lifting routine should increase strength.

However, there is little evidence in current research that suggests that glutamine is truly an essential supplement for bodybuilding. While the research does indicate that glutamine has benefits during clinical stress testing, it has little synergy with exercise. This was tested with an amount of glutamine estimated to have a yearly cost of up to $1000.
In those studies, they were not referring to stress for exercise, but stress from medical maladies such as severe burns, AIDS, and invasive surgery. The research suggested that glutamine supplementation during weight training did not enhance muscle performance, body composition, or muscle catabolism in normal adults.
Some people assumed that glutamine increased cell volume, but research has also disproven this notion. It was also demonstrated that glutamine does not decrease lowered immune system functioning as a result of exercise.
The issue of whether glutamine enhances glycogen storage following a workout was not directly addressed. However, some bodybuilders maintain that as a moot point, as you will consume a high-calorie carbohydrate shake after you complete your exercises regardless.
A final study indicated that drinking an amino acid drink after your workouts elevated protein synthesis by nearly 50 percent. When glutamine was included, there was no further enhancement of protein synthesis. Are you still convinced of glutamine's utility as a supplement for bodybuilding?
Well like in most issues, with glutamine there is a shade of gray. While the benefits of glutamine were vastly overblown, it does provide some assistance and could very well be a useful supplement for bodybuilding.
