This is something that has happened to all of us at some point…

As you becoming increasingly stronger and thus work out with more weight, your muscles are increasingly stressed so you are continually increasing the amount of damage done to your body's recovery capacity.

Thus, an advanced lifter that does 6 bench press reps at 300 pounds is damaging his body's recovery ability to a far greater extent than a more novice lifter that only works out with 125 pounds.

How does this relate to plateaus?

In every way!

If you are continually increasing the stress to your muscles and body by constantly increasing the amount of weight you lift, you MUST compensate for this added stress by lowering your number of sets and how often you lift.

If you are constantly increasing the stress on your muscles with added weight without adjusting your reps and days of training, you will eventually exceed your body's capacity to completely recover after workouts.

Improper recovery occurs when your muscles are not provided with enough time to remodel your tissues and produce additional size and strength.

This is why you see your gains decrease and ultimately end. You aren't giving your body enough time to compensate for the stress by increasing your muscle size and strength before you return to the gym to further stress them with additional weight and reps. If you never allow this "hole" in your recovery ability to be filled, you will never overcome your plateau.

As you advance in your weight training, it is imperative that you train on fewer days with fewer sets!

Your progress is dependent on a balanced equation determined by your training intensity and volume. As one variable grows, the other MUST decline.
